Formal Hairstyles

Asian ladies are known for their natural elegance. Ziyi Zhang, the glamorous Chinese actress, has one of the top hairstyles on this site. It is very elegant without demanding attention or being pretentious. Besides being so good in and of itself, it is especially flattering on her, although it seems slightly big for a girl with small head. A more recent photo of her on InStyle.com with party hair is also quite attractive; a how-to guide accompanies their image.

Sandra Oh is a big star but this 'do is more of a don't. It simply doesn't offer the glamour and excitement you expect from Hollywood stars with her fame and stature. The shape is dull with a top that is too loose and a bottom that is boring, super-thin strands. The crown is sort of corrugated like huge cornrows. Tendrils are okay but only on the sides; otherwise you get a hot mess. You may agree, however, she made a better decision with her red-carpet choice of beachy waves.

The formal intention of Yoon-jin Kim is obvious but it is almost half-hearted, thereby making it too reminiscent of a combover. You know, the greasy habit of clueless and unstylish men that women can't stand. If it were cleaned with a quick fix so the wayward thin strands are attached to the thicker parts, that could be enough. But this is not a very popular style, and the best thing to do could be to collect all the bangs into a single group.

Kelly Hu has found new projects in recent years, so we see her more often in the public eye.

Styling Asian Hair Videos

Unless you're a major socialite in New York or Los Angeles, you probably don't have vast experience creating formal designs. This is where YouTube can come in very handy. For example, it has a Romantic Hair Design Tutorial. (Embedding was disabled, so you need to click on the link.) It's a two-minute tutorial by a teen girl which has good ratings. The style is cute and easy but perhaps too basic for some. If you haven't done too many updos, however, it's a good place to start learning.
